HOW TO: Make an iPad Case Using Common Household Materials

Everyone needs to tote around a few devices these days, but when it comes to electronics cases, there aren’t too many fashionable and inexpensive options to choose from.

With DIY infused in my DNA, I am programmed to create things that make my life more beautiful and fun. Inspired by all of the bold striped patterns and color blocking styles seen on the runway this season, I thought it fitting to make my own iPad clutch out of common materials.

Even if you’re “craft-challenged,” I guarantee anyone can create a one-of-a-kind iPad case in about 15 minutes. Here’s how.

Ingredients:
Kitchen drawer liner (Available at the Container Store, Bad Bath Beyond, target - Basically any home store)
A sharp pair of Scissors
Colorful tape. i like duct tape, But gaffer's tape and even electrical tape will work.
Velcro strips
Step 1: Cut the drawer liner to the desired length. Two-thirds will become the pocket and the remaining third will be a flap closure that folds down over the pocket.
Step 2: Once you have measured your pocket, use a piece of tape to cover, secure, and wrap around the entire front and back. This will seal the edges.
Step 3: Continue to do so, adding pieces of tape around it until you are satisfied with the design. Make sure you have enough tape to keep your pocket intact without large gaps on the sides.
Step 4: Be sure to smooth the tape flat to make sure there are no air bubbles or bumps.
Step 5: Optionally, tape the other side to prevent fraying.
Step 6: Get creative with your colors and design. Add a monogram or try a bold pattern.
Step 7: Once taped, cut and stick velcro as a closure for the case. One piece should be on the inside flap (bottom), the other on the front flap (top). Be sure to line everything up properly so the case closes well.
Step 8: Viola!
Final: Ditch your iPad when necessary and use the clutch for other purposes: a travel pouch, accessory bag, document case, etc.

Obama's got an iPad, and he tethers too !!

Despite calling Apple's iPad, among other modern-day entertainment gadgets, a conduit for distraction less than a year ago, U.S. President Barack Obama has been outed as an iPad owner himself.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, Obama detailed that fact during a town hall meeting with Spanish-language network Univision, which took place earlier today.

During an interview with Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, Obama said he does in fact have an iPad, and even tethers it to his high-security BlackBerry cell phone. Obama also noted that he owns his own computer, joking to Ramos and the audience about the idea of him having to borrow one from someone else:
Ramos: Not long ago I was having a conversation with my son. He's only 12 years old, and he couldn't believe that I grew up in a world where there were no cell phones, no Internet, no computers. (Laughter.) So do you have your BlackBerry with you, or do you have an iPhone? What do you have?
Obama: You know, I took my BlackBerry off for this show, because I didn't want it going off, and that would be really embarrassing. But usually I carry a BlackBerry around.
Ramos: Do you have an iPad?
Obama: I do have an iPad.
Ramos: Your own [a] computer?
Obama: I've got my own computer.
Ramos: Very well. (Laughter.)
Obama: I mean, Jorge, I'm the President of the United States. You think I've got a -- (laughter and applause) -- you think I've got to go borrow somebody's computer? (Laughter.) Hey, man, can I borrow your computer? (Laughter.) How about you? You've got one?
In a commencement speech to students of Hampton University last May, Obama admitted to not knowing how to work Apple's iPod or iPad, or Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation game consoles. Obama had also referred to the devices as turning information into a "distraction, a diversion," and "a form of entertainment" that kept people from empowering themselves.
The flip-flop on that particular topic is certainly a testament to the iPad being more than an entertainment device, even if that's what Obama is using his for. Perhaps we'll soon have a list of Obama's favorite apps if he's as happy to share them as he was with his NCAA basketball tournament picks.

Rumor: Steam looking at iOS integration

This is interesting -- according to a Steam user who got to Valve headquarters in Washington, the popular game network may be looking at extending itself out onto the iOS platform. That doesn't necessarily mean that there would be a straight-up Steam client for the iPhone and the iPad (although how awesome would that be?) but rather, it sounds like Steam is looking at integrating either its social networking or achievement integration features out towards Apple's platform, in the form of an app or something else.

Whatever they're working on we can't wait to see it.
Steam coming to Mac OS was a huge boon for Mac gaming, and the success of iOS was, I believe, a major reason that happened in the first place. Whatever Valve wants to do on iOS, there's no doubt it'll big a big bonus for customers.

iPad 2 benchmarks show impressive gains over original model

One of the first things many iPad 2 upgraders noticed was that the new device seemed very fast in comparison to the original iPad. Over at GigaOM, blogger Geoffrey Goetz ran benchmarks on an iPhone 4, an iPad, and an iPad 2 (all running iOS 4.3) to show how speedy the new iPad really is.

As you can see in the chart above, the iPad 2 consistently outperformed the Apple A4-powered iPad and iPhone 4 in every test. Using the GeekBench tests from Primate Labs, the iPad 2 was about 64% faster than its predecessor in overall results. Likewise, the Gague benchmarks showed an overall performance gain of about 56%, while BenchTest clocked in with a 63% improvement.

Goetz noted that he personally believed that his iPhone 4 was faster than his original iPad, a belief that the benchmarks proved to be incorrect. He also compared iOS 4.3 benchmarks submitted by a large sampling of GeekBench users, all of which supported his assertion that the iPad 2 performance gains are "stunning."

The GeekBench numbers show the iPad 2 to be roughly as powerful as a G4-based 15" PowerBook or Mac mini, but as Goetz summarizes in his post, "I really don't think that raw performance alone is where the focus needs to be anymore."

Flash To HTML5 Conversion Tool ‘Wallaby’ Brings Flash Content To iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Adobe today has released their Flash-to-HTML5 conversion tool in an effort to bring Flash based content on to non-Flash devices such as the popular iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Dubbed as Wallaby (codename), the software enables developers to convert their Flash based content to a compatible HTML5 version so that they can run on HTML5 based browsers like Mobile Safari, found on iOS devices.
"Wallaby" is the codename for an experimental technology that converts the artwork and animation contained in Adobe® Flash® Professional (FLA) files into HTML. Wallaby is not a final product and is still in the testing and validation phase. We are not yet able to commit to a roadmap for this experimental technology.
9to5Mac has got a nice video walkthrough which shows the said software in action:

Available for both Windows and Mac, Wallaby can be downloaded via the links given below.

Personal Hotspot Feature Coming to all iPhones in iOS 4.3 (Confirmed)

Yesterday was Verizon iPhone’s day and we saw the personal hotspot feature that debuted on the Verizon iPhone yesterday in iOS 4.2.5. Well, a source of BGR has told them that this feature’ll be making its way to all iPhones in iOS 4.3.

According to our source, the personal hotspot feature that debuted on the Verizon iPhone yesterday will, in fact, be making its way to all iPhones in iOS 4.3. We’re sure there will need to be carrier support for this feature, and for AT&T users it is entirely possible we might not see this right away.
According to the report, you’ll be able to connect up to five devices over Wi-Fi to the iPhone’s cellular data connection. Their source notifies that iOS 4.3 version 8F5148b will be launched in March with baseband 04.08.00. New baseband? Should the unlock be delayed until iOS 4.3 launch? Or released before 16th January? Share your ideas in the comment section below !

iOS 4.3 to Arrive by January 19th ?

As noted by MacRumors that Forbes has confirmed with a trusted source that the publication of "The Daily" will be formally announced on January 19th. The Daily will be a new journal specifically for iPad only with Apple support.

Mark your calendars, media nerds. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011 is the day it all changes. Maybe.

That's the planned launch date for The Daily, the iPad-only publication News Corp. has been feverishly developing. The company has yet to say boo about it, and a spokesman declined to comment when I asked him about the launch date, which comes via a News Corp. insider.
It's now expected that Apple will release iOS 4.3 with the arrival of this electronic journal "The Daily", as Apple has been said to be supporting The Daily with "recurring subscription payments" for iTunes accounts, this famous feature will only exist on the upcoming iOS 4.3. Anyway, let's wait and see. [via iSpazio]

iPad: Second Monitor Wirelessly (New)

DisplayLink announced an $1.99 application today that turns an iPad into a second monitor wirelessly connected to a Windows computer.
The application works with Windows XP, Vista, and 7 and requires an iPad with iOS 3.2 or later, the company said. It's configured with the DisplayLink software that the company offers for its primary line of business, USB-connected display technology.

"The productivity benefits of multiple displays has been proven, so leveraging the idle screen of the iPad while computing is ideal for parking and for running applications like instant messaging, e-mail, social networking, Web browsing, and other business tools to avoid constantly switching views on the laptop screen," DisplayLink said in a statement.
That may sound like a lot of marketing fluff, but I love having a secondary monitor. Also, if you already have a DisplayLink-connected external monitor hooked in with USB, the iPad can become a third, the company added.

Facbook's iPad: Facepad, at last

Because Facebook's CEO and founder Mr. Mark Zuckerberg believes that iPad isn't as mobile as the smartphone, he (i mean Facebook) hasn't released any official client for iPad until now.
The other developers use this opportunity to create many iPad's Facebook apps such as {Friendly for Facebook} one of the most popular Facebook app for iPad.

And now, Facepad is in the game. Facepad for iPad was released last week and it has clearly taken some design clues from the popular Twitter client called Twitter for iPad.

The similarities are obvious, but not in a bad way. The app works using windows or tabs, so you can open multiple profiles and check them out in seconds. People who have used this app seem to have really like it. It has had over a million ad impressions in its first twelve hours of release. This doubled after twenty-four hours, and now it is the 15th most popular app on the iTunes App Store.

Apple May Have Patched Limera1n Exploit in Newer iOS Devices (iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch) – Report

We have just been tipped off, by the user himself to an interesting story that he posted over at ModMyi Forums where he bought a new iPad (running iOS 4.2.1) for his lady as a Christmas present, only to find out that he was not able to jailbreak it using the latest version of Redsn0w.

orbyorb: @TaimurAsad Please read http://bit.ly/hJuCSc –limera1n has probably been patched in iOS devices rolling out as of this week.
In case you don’t already know, the current version of Redsn0w uses Geohot’s bootrom based Limera1n exploit to jailbreak all current iOS devices on the latest firmware. Since Limera1n exploit exists in the hardware, only a hardware revision from Apple could have patched it. And if Jack’s findings are true, Apple might have patched it in the new stock of iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod touch 4G and Apple TV 2G.

Here is the complete story:
I made a trip to the Apple Store today to get an iPad for my old lady (Christmas present). She told me she’d love it jailbroken, so I sat down in front of my computer to redsn0w this 4.2.1 iPad.
One problem–redsn0w 0.9.6b6 could not upload a pwned iBSS (hanged at the white screen on OS X, upload timed out and rebooted into jailed state with Windows).
Furthermore, the device constantly stalls when attempting to dump its bootrom. This leads me to believe the injection vector used via USB has been patched in DFU mode.
Case in point: Any iOS device with a serial number xx050 (this week) or higher might be unable to be jailbroken via the limera1n exploit. Slightly older devices may be invulnerable as well.
So if your new iOS device comes with serial number xx050, there is a high chance that Limera1n is already patched on this device and you may not be able to jailbreak it with current jailbreak tools.
Again, we are not sure if this is indeed the case. Hopefully someone from the Dev-Team will soon shed some light on this. [Thanks to Jack for the hat tip via Twitter]

Skyfire Browser Heading to iPad Soon [VIDEO]

Skyfire, a web browser that runs flash content on your iPhone or iPod touch is really coming to the iPad soon. The browser has been demonstrated in a video can be found after the jump.

According to Wired, the Skyfire iPad app will carry some new features in addition to its core function (i.e. playing porn videos, nah, I meant flash videos). Skyfire works by transcoding Flash video into HTML5 so it’s playable on Apple’s iOS, which doesn’t normally support Flash. The iPad version will also adds the ability to view your Facebook, Twitter, or Google Reader feeds. Check the video below:

Skyfire browser for iPad is said to be arriving “hopefully before Christmas” and will probably cost $5.00. Stay tuned for that ! [via Gadget Lab]

iPad 2G Cases Suggest Rear-Facing Camera and SD Card Slot?

It's time for iPad 2 rumors, iLounge is reporting that a Chinese manufacturer, is now offering what it claims is a case for the second-generation iPad. The leaked images and informations claims that the device will have rear-facing camera and SD card slot.
The first image comes from Shenzhen MacTop Electronics showing a shell of white case of 2nd-generation iPad and also shows an opening in the top left corner suggests a Facetime camera.
The second one comes from a Japanese site shows similar cases in black and white models, with a hole for the camera in the upper left corner and the same volume / headphone jack layout of the current generation iPad. As MacRumors notes, however, the spot for the volume buttons in these cases looks smaller.
The case also suggest the same hole in the lower right corner we have seen in the first white case image above, and the description page claims the iPad 2 will come with an SD slot. What I can say, the rumors will start to spread everywhere on the web specially that we know that iPad 2G will ship in less than 100 days.
