Thieves Are Stealing Children's Identities

Identity theft has saddled thousands of children with debt, sometimes for years before they ever discover their personal information has been stolen, a study says.

Within a database of 42,232 children that was compiled by an identity-protection business, 4,311 -- 10.2% -- had someone else using their Social Security numbers, according to "Child Identity Theft," a report by Richard Power, a distinguished fellow at Carnegie Mellon Cylab.

MORE ON THE PROBLEM: FTC: ID theft again tops consumer complaints

In one case, a 17-year-old girl's Social Security number was used by eight different people to amass $725,000 in debt. In another case, a 14-year-old boy had a 10-year-old credit history that included a mortgage on a $605,000 house, according to information supplied to Power by the identity-protection firm All Clear ID.

The study analyzed the types of documents on which the Social Security numbers appeared, and it found that 70% were loan or credit card applications, 18% utility bills, 5% property assessments, deeds, mortgages and foreclosures, 4% driver's licenses and 2% vehicle registration.

While 1 in 10 children in the database had their identities stolen, only 0.2% of the adults fell victim in the same way, Power says, and that stark contrast raises questions. "Are child Social Security numbers a hot commodity?" Power writes. "Are cyber criminals and other fraudsters seeking them out? Are child IDs preferable for fraudsters?"

The answer is that he doesn't know, and can't know until there is a study that is designed to compile results that can be extrapolated to the general population. Power says he and others at Carnegie Mellon University are considering such a study, but none is planned yet.

Meanwhile, it doesn't make a lot of difference what percentage of children's IDs are stolen, Power says. If you're the one it happens to, it's a nightmare, and most people don't even consider it as a possibility. "The other dimension is to raise awareness of this as an issue," he says.

In some cases parents with bad credit ratings use their children's Social Security numbers to open accounts with utility companies so they can get water and electricity without intending to harm the children's credit, Holland says. In other cases, criminals use the number to profit. Some are used by people in the country illegally who are trying to establish credit, and buy houses and cars.

The database used for the study was all the people under 18 that were listed in All Clear ID's 800,000-plus database of people whose personally identifiable information had been compromised. The firm is hired by businesses that suffer data breaches and want to extend some protection to those who could become victims, says Bo Holland, All Clear ID's CEO.

In most cases, identities endangered by data breaches do not fall under systematic attack, Holland says. The identities are compromised, but don't appear to be taken by someone who then actively tries to capitalize on them. Names that fell under targeted attacks were dropped from the database used for the study, he says.

People worried that a child's Social Security number is being misused can check it out free at http://freechildscan.allclearid.com for a limited time.

Using Twitter to Preserve Minority Languages

Of the approximately 6,000 languages alive in the world today, 60 percent or more are said to be dying out. The majority of the world's languages are, in fact, "minority" languages, used in the shadow of a more politically powerful tongue.

On St. Patrick's Day, Prof. Kevin Scannell of St. Louis University launched a project called Indigenous Tweets. Using a web-crawling statistical software he wrote called An Crúbadán, Scannell identifies which minority languages are being tweeted, by whom and how.

Michael Schade, one of Scannell's students, explains the need.
"Twitter describes itself as 'the best way to discover what's new in your world,' but there is a fundamental issue with this: 'world' is presently limited by the inclusion of only a handful of languages. Although people can tweet in any language on Twitter, finding users who speak the same language is a difficult, or even a seemingly impossible, task. This is especially true for...minority languages."
Scannell's web-crawling software, An Crúbadán, first seeds Twitter searches with common but distinctive words of his 500 languages and crawls Twitter. It finds users who speaks these languages and ranks them. Scannell then recalculates trending topics with a focus on the language specifically, where they are imported into the Indigenous Tweet site.

The top minority languages on Twitter are currently Haitian creole, Basque and Welsh.

On Scannell's project blog, also called Indigenous Tweets, Prof. Scannell says the way he hopes the project will prove useful to minority speakers seeking to keep their languages vital is to make "it easier for speakers of indigenous and minority languages to find each other in the vast sea of English, French, Spanish, and other global languages that dominate Twitter."

As Schade points out, Twitter attempts to classify the language of all tweets, but it sometimes does a poor job of it, especially with the minority languages. Because Scannell has amassed large corpora and developed a technology geared toward identifying languages that might have little readily-available data to start with, he has seen much higher accuracy in language identification and analysis.

This is research that could help Twitter differentiate their users with greater specificity, as well as allow the growth of individual user's communities based on, among other things, language use.

Twitter Drops The Ecosystem Hammer: Don’t Try To Compete With Us On Clients, Focus On Data And Verticals

For much of the past year, the Twitter ecosystem has been in a state of flux. Ever since Twitter bought Tweetie and turned it into their own native iPhone app, third-party developers have been wondering where this would leave them. Further moves by Twitter into Android, iPad, Mac, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and other spaces have only compounded some of this fear.

So Twitter has taken some time today in their developer forum to talk a bit about the state of the ecosystem and give some guidance. It’s blunt, but necessary.

Specifically, Platform lead Ryan Sarver has a fairly lengthy outline of Twitter’s line of thinking with regard to third-party clients and services. And while there’s a little bit of dancing around the topic at first, it quickly gets very clear: third-parties probably shouldn’t be creating straight-up Twitter clients any further.

Sarver notes that Twitter views a “consistent user experience” as very important to them. And it’s something they’re going to hold third-party developers to a very high standard to maintain. But they don’t want them to mimic Twitter’s own experience with their native apps in order to do this. They’ve updated the API Terms of Service to reflect this.

“Developers have told us that they’d like more guidance from us about the best opportunities to build on Twitter. More specifically, developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience. The answer is no,” Sarver writes very matter-of-factly.

“If you are an existing developer of client apps, you can continue to serve your user base, but we will be holding you to high standards to ensure you do not violate users’ privacy, that you provide consistency in the user experience, and that you rigorously adhere to all areas of our Terms of Service. We have spoken with the major client applications in the Twitter ecosystem about these needs on an ongoing basis, and will continue to ensure a high bar is maintained,” he continues.

BarBird Makes Twitter More Fun on a Saturday Night

Without any introductions if you looking to hit the town, just use BarBird iPhone app: a smart little interface that lets you:

  1. Map
  2. View
  3. Filter
Map, view and filter Twitter updates from nearly 10,000 bars and restaurants in 50 cities around the world.

Twitter is a remarkably easy way for small business owners to use SMS or Facebook to publish their specials, event promotions and other information that makes it easier to identify spots that you might want to patronize. BarBird is like a geo-aware, semantically smart, venue-update browser on your phone. I like it. It's been fun to test so far.

In addition to the mobile app, BarBird also offers a website interface - though I've found no reason to use that - the phone works better. BarBird loads up a Google Map for your surroundings and displays recent updates from bars and restaurants. Each update is placed on a map and represented by a different icon depending on what kinds of language the update uses. You can choose to filter to view only updates concerning events happening tonight, discount specials, live music, ladies' nights, no cover events or happy hour deals.

Hopefully more kinds of filters will be made available in the future. I'd love to be able to view Tweets near me concerning particularly exciting meals. I'm really into hyper-local news, as well as food and drink - so this seems just like a little neighborhood newswire and real-time guide to me.

You can also view the updates in list form and the app makes it easy to access all a venue's Tweets, their Google Places information and reviews (look out, Yelp) and get directions to the venue.

Saying these kinds of combo-apps are more appealing than Yelp is no exaggeration. It's one thing to read long-form reviews of a restaurant, it's another to be able to read tonight's updates from a bar that posted by SMS or Twitter app. This combination of technologies really lowers the barrier to publishing updates for small businesses.

Of course all of this presumes that small businesses will use Twitter. If they get results, presumably they will. Apps like BarBird, or integration of this kind of feature into other apps, could help make that more realistic.
Building the Listings
How did BarBird index 10,000 venues from 44 US cities and 6 cities outside the US? That's an interesting part of the story as well. Co-founder Pierce Lamb says that craftiness went a long way.

The company was able to build such a large data set so quickly by leveraging user-generated categorization on Twitter, in the form of Twitter Lists that users curated for their own uses on Twitter. By finding collections of Twitter accounts labeled with titles like "Portland bars," (or whatever the city might be) BarBird was able to collect a large number of likely topical Twitter accounts at least ostensibly connected to a type of business. The team then queried Google Maps to see if each Twitter username captured returned a street adress; if it did not, then it was tossed out.

The self-funded team hopes to offer venue owners an analytic package as their business model. I'm not sure that's the wisest strategy (advertising seems most logical, but maybe I'm wrong) but the nice thing about BarBird is that the Tweets are already out there - this app just finds them and organizes them in a relavant context.

Logging into Twitter and Facebook using your Face & Voice [Video]

A great new feature has just been developed by European MoBio (Mobile Biometry) Project, Manchester Team. They have worked so hard on this feature and now N900 can run this feature. The features allows you to login to your favorite "Social Network" using "Voice" and "Face Recognition".
This new feature has made it easy for users to log-in to their account using their voice or their face, it also includes face movement and eye blinking so no one can easily login to your account. This means that this new feature has brought Security and reliability.
As part of the European MoBio (mobile biometry) Project, the Manchester team has developed a demo app that can log the user into Gmail, Twitter and Facebook using just face and voice recognition. Work on the technology finishes this month and Dr Philip A. Tresadern says that a number of well-known companies in the mobile space have shown interest in using the technology.
According to Dr Tresadern we can't fool this App as it also uses our eyeblinking and face movement. He also added that they have done this experiment on Nokia N900 and this feature might also hit iPhone 4 late after their experimentation on iOS devices.

Cool features, eh? What do you think? [via TNW]

Android users rejoice! Twitter for Android has received a major update which includes some awesome enhancements and introduces a more consistent experience keeping users well updated, connected and with access to features as compared to Twitter for iPhone App.

Firefox Extension Can Hack Your Facebook and Twitter On Any Unsecured WiFi Network

At a Cafe? Connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network? Now, anyone can gain access to all of your social network login information whenever you connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Guess what? Your Twitter or Facebook account can be hacked using a Firefox extension!

ReadWriteWeb points to his new Firefox extension which is called Firesheep and developed by Eric Butler. Here's Bulter explains how it works on his blog:
On an open wireless network, cookies are basically shouted through the air, making these attacks extremely easy
Firesheep opens a sidebar in Firefox that shows everyone who is connected to a certain unsecured WiFi network. With a single click, you can connect to most any social network using that person's user name and password.
For anyone who complains about this, TechCrunch pointed to Force-TLS as a way to protect your information from FireSheep but Bulter answers the following:
Websites have a responsibility to protect the people who depend on their services

They've been ignoring this responsibility for too long, and it's time for everyone to demand a more secure web. My hope is that Firesheep will help the users win.

Twitter CEO Ev Williams is Stepping Down to Focus On Product

Twitter is replacing CEO (Chief executive officer) and Co-Founder Ev Williams with COO (Chief operating officer) Dick Costolo, so that Williams “be completely focused on product strategy.”. We all were shocked when we saw the blog post by Williams talking about #NewTwitterCEO. Here's the blog post.
The challenges of growing an organization so quickly are numerous. Growing big is not success, in itself. Success to us means meeting our potential as a profitable company that can retain its culture and user focus while having a positive impact on the world. This is no small task. I frequently reflect on the type of focus that is required from everyone at Twitter to get us there.

This led to a realization as we launched the new Twitter. I am most satisfied while pushing product direction. Building things is my passion, and I’ve never been more excited or optimistic about what we have to build.

This is why I have decided to ask our COO, Dick Costolo, to become Twitter’s CEO. Starting today, I’ll be completely focused on product strategy.
Twitter was growing in the last two years since Williams was the CEO, he mentioned that when he started there were only 20 employees working at Twitter, today there are 300 employees. Also people were tweeting about 1.25 million tweets a day, now, about 90 million a day. Even in those same two years, Twitter grew from 3 million registered users to more than 160 million today. So, Ev Williams was really a great CEO.

Meet the New Twitter Website [Hands On]

Twitter's been trending on it's own social media website over the weekend about #NewTwitter, now, it's been revealed (at least for me). The new Twitter website is very similar to it's newly released iPad app with two-column style, the left one showing the stream and the right one providing all content, videos, images, and other content. The coolest feature in the new Twitter is embedded content, it'll now open in-line in the right column.
Of course, the biggest addition is adding pictures and videos embedded on the site, sixteen media providers are on the board including Twitpic, Youtube, Twitvid, Vimeo, Ustream, and other popular picture & video services. The search bar and settings has been given placement at the top of the site in its own header. Rollouts are selected by members not places, within weeks, everyone will get it, and also can get back to the old one (but no one would do that).

Ok, I don't want to talk a lot as the pictures and screenshots can say all what I need to say, but at least I can say, we can now give up our dedicated Twitter clients (TweetDeck, HootSuite, Echofon, etc.), Pictures below.

Two Most Requested Features, Come to New Twitter

Twitter will enrich its new web interface with some new features, today we were tipped with arrival of the most requested features which will be touchable in the New Twitter. the two features are "Reply to All" and "Auto-complete"

Reply-to-all function does exactly what you would think, so that if some names are mentioned in a tweet, your reply button will now reply to all mentioned names. If you want to remove any of the mentioned names, you have to handle this manually.
Auto-complete function allows you simply start with the '@' sign and type the first letter of any name, then it will automatically suggest you with names.
Some of these feature may be already existing on some Twitter client apps, but we can't forget the big amount of users who just use the service wia twitter.com, Any way it seems like we will surprised with tons of the new amazing features on the NewTwitter interface.

Twitter is Under Attack [WARNING], [Updatet 1x]

A new Twitter security flaw has been widely exploited on thousands of Twitter accounts, this was due to a new Javascript exploit that is currently spreading like wildfire across Twitter service. The bug is particularly nasty because it works on mouse-over only. that means pop-ups and third party website can open even if you just move your mouse over the offending link.
JavaScript function called onMouseOver is behind this flaw, which creates an event when the mouse is passed over a chunk of text. For who are using third party twitter apps, they are safe from the bug.

Update 1: Few minutes ago twitter has mentioned fixing of this bug.
We've identified and are patching a XSS attack; as always, please message @safety if you have info regarding such an exploit.
