Seventh Beta of 10.6.7 Now Available in Mac Dev Center

Earlier today Apple seeded the seventh beta of OS X 10.6.7 (a Snow Leopard update, not Lion) and is available for developers at the Mac Dev Center. The build number is 10J868.

There are no known issues with the build and as has been a similar case with previous betas, Apple is asking developers to focus on Safari, Mac App Store, AirPort, Bonjour, SMB, and Graphics Drivers.

Twitter for Mac: ‘Tweet’ from Anywhere in OS X

Just a few days ago everyone was talking about a simple bookmarklet for Safari that sends the site title and link to Twitter for Mac (Tweetie 2). Last night, I even found a Safari extension that did the same thing but also adds a tweet option in the contextual menu (right click) within Safari.

Right after I tweeted the link, @SebastienPeek told me “who needs that when you can highlight anything, right click and it’ll show Tweet?” I had no idea what he was talking about, do you? I asked him if it was Safari only and he went one step more and said that it’s system wide, you can do it with a right click and highlight of any text. @BoltClock is credited with pointing me to this discovery. It’s system-wide for all apps that support Mac OS X’s contextual menu item additions. Here’s some visual goodness:
Simply:

  • Click and drag almost any text in Safari or Chrome
  • Right click and ‘Tweet’.

It tosses the text into the new tweet window in Twitter for Mac. I found it also works in apps like iChat, Mail.app, Ecoute, Reeder, iCal. These are just a few. Some things that it doesn’t play nice with: the address bar in your web browser, text embedded in Flash, Firefox, just to name a few.
Sure, the bookmarklet and the Safari extension do a bit more than than just sending selected text from Safari into a new tweet, but Twitter for Mac’s ‘Tweet’ sends selected text from all over OS X. I think Twitter for Mac is one cool bird.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS:
If this is not working for you, please check your Services Prefs and make sure ‘Tweet’ is checked under Files and Folders.

  • Open terminal.app and paste “/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user”
  • Reboot and ‘Tweet’ should now show up in your contextual menu.

Apple Releases OS X 10.6.6 and Mac App Store

A great news few minutes ago from Apple which released OS X 10.6.6 with access to the Mac App Store in Software Update.
About 114 MB is available now free to download for Snow Leopard users. As noted by Macworld, the Mac App Store includes some apps from Apple such as:
  • The three key apps in the $49 iLife ’11 suite—iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand—are now available via the Mac App Store for $15 each. The boxed iLife ’11 suite, in contrast, costs $49—slightly more than the three apps a la carte, though the suite also includes iDVD and iWeb, two apps that haven’t been substantially updated in recent years.
  • The three apps that make up the $79 iWork ’09 suite—Pages, Keynote, and Numbers—are also available on the Mac App Store, for $20 each, undercutting the $79 price of the boxed suite. It’s an even better deal if you’re only a user of one of the apps—Keynote, for example.
  • Aperture and Apple Remote Desktop are also on sale in the Mac App Store, both available at $79.99.
Full changelog and first screenshots of the Mac App Store below.

Cydia Coming to Mac Soon!

Apple has been working hard to try to make the Mac App Store possible. Now, Saurik the creator of Cydia app store for iOS devices has announced that he is going to bring Cydia for the Mac!
According the TUAW, Saurik made this astonishing announcement at 360|MavDev giving an overview of his upcoming Cydia for MAC OS X, Cycript, and Cydia Substrate.
Currently, Cydia Installer has been used by about 10% of all iPhone users, or about 10 million devices. There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.

Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be available "within weeks." With today's news that the Mac App Store will not support in-app purchases, something that is critical to the freemium app model that is so successful in the iOS world, a Mac Cydia might be just the web store for a number of Mac developers.
This is a very huge advance for the jailbreak scene. Not only will there be jailbroken iDevices, now it's being expanded for Mac! This will be out within weeks! Any developers interested in trying to get their app into Cydia for Mac is always free to contact Patrick at saurikit.com

Mac App Store to Open Next Monday Along with iOS 4.3 Launch?

In case you are on of our readers, you may know that Apple is reportedly launching iOS 4.3 next Monday (December 13th). However, an inside source has just told Appletell that Apple is targeting a Monday, December 13th launch of the Mac App Store.
An inside source has just told us that Apple is targeting a Monday, December 13th launch of the Mac App Store. The company apparently told developers to have their software prepared for a launch as early as Monday the 6th of this month, but our contact would be shocked if that happened at this point. Apple has made no official announcements regarding this, and delays could always happen, but there's a push to be launched before Christmas, well ahead of the previously estimated January release.
At the Back to the Mac even on October 20th, Steve Jobs confirmed that the Mac App Store should be launched after 90 days which means late in January 2011 so we can't verify these claims but we do know that Apple has already started asking developers to submit their apps to the Mac App Store and has already seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.6 to Mac App developers. So this may claims that Apple would launch it earlier than what they said. More updates as they come, stay tuned !

AirPrintHacktivator Activates Airprint in Mac OS X 10.6.5 with One Click

Airprint was already hacktivated manually (look at 9to5mac) and it took lots of steps but now the easy one has just been released by Neputing. Now Hacktivating your Airprint on Mac OS X 10.6.5 is really easy with this new tool. AirprintHacktivator can easily activate your Airprint automatically with just a click. You can now Havktivate and De-Hacktivate Airprint with this tool.
I wrote a quick and dirty application called AirPrintHacktivator that will do it for you. The application allow you to “Hacktivate” and “De Hacktivate” AirPrint by adding or removing the 3 files required… all of this while making a backup of the current files so they are properly restored during “De Hacktivation”.

WARNING! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! It is working fine for me but don’t come crying if it break something on your Mac
You can use this tool only on Mac OS X 10.6.5 and it will not work on previous versions. We see some reports floating on the web indicating that it works on fine for all.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Brings Tons of New Features

Back to the Mac was a great event for Mac lovers! First, two new Macbook air announces one 11.6-inch and other 13.3-inch. Then, Steve Jobs announced Mac OS X 10.7 or what's called by Lion.
Multi-touch gestures
Apple knows that touch screen notebooks don’t work, trackpads and mice are the way to multitouch a desktop operating system. With this in mind, Lion will have advanced gesture support

Mac App Store
The App Store revolutionized mobile applications, so of course they bring it to the Mac. Features are automatic installation, one-click downloads, automatic app updates, apps will be licensed for use on all of your Macs. This will be available first under 10.6 Snow Leopard in 90 days. On the developer side, the Mac App Store will have the same developer 70/30 split as the iOS App Store, and submissions will be accepted soon. See screenshot below of the Mac App Store:

Launchpad
Launchpad is Home Screen for your Mac, supports multitouch gestures and multiple pages of apps, folder support, the whole thing very similar to iOS on an iPad. This is part of a newer and more refined Mac OS X GUI. See screenshot below:

Full screen apps
immersive experience of iOS apps comes to the Mac, true full screen support for apps, takes away window bars. Supports multitouch gestures to swap between fullscreen apps, desktops, and other apps. See screenshot below:

Mission Control
Expose, full screen apps, Dashboard, Spaces all in one – (we called better window management) – how do you make them all work together? Unify them under Mission Control

Auto-save
self explanatory, awesome feature and much needed. Clicking Save feels archaic after using an iPad/iPhone, doesn’t it? Yup, bring it to Mac OS X

Mac OS X Lion has a scheduled release date of summer 2011. It will be called Lion and is a significant update to OS X. ac App Store will open up within 90 days and will work on Snow Leopard. [via OS X Daily]
