Apple to unveil new Final Cut Pro at NAB event?

It's been awhile since a new version of Apple's Final Cut Pro video editing software was released, but that may change at next week's annual National Association of Broadcasters show. A new report from ProVideoCoalition says Apple plans on "taking over" the 10th annual SuperMeet event taking place on April 12 to announce a new version of the software.

LinkedIn's Answer to Facebook's Open Graph

Professional social network Linkedin has opened up access to a new developer platform today that should bring LinkedIn content, buttons, Twitter-esque "profile summaries" and more to websites throughout the Web.

The platform, though, isn't just for developers. LinkedIn is offering an entire suite of plugins to bring all of this content to your website. Even better, it's making it as easy as the click of a button and it could offer some serious competition to Facebook's Open Graph on sites that cater to the career-minded.

"With this release, we're including a powerful set of new plugins; to further help bring professional identity & insights into your application," writes the company on its blog. "For example, you can show your visitors who they know in a professional context with the Member Profile plugin, and display rich personalized insights about companies featured on your site with the Company Insider plugin."

On top of buttons for sharing websites and recommending products, LinkedIn is offering a set of plugins to display profile summaries, full profiles, company profiles and "company insider." This last plugin shows customized information about a company including who, in the logged-in person's network, works there, a list of new hires and job changes, and even the ability to follow such news. That's the other big offering - a LinkedIn login that supports OAuth 2.0.

The ease with which these features can be implemented will likely be the most exciting point for many non-developers. The plugins take a couple lines of code that can be copied and pasted into a site's code. All you need to do to get a plugin is go to LinkedIn's plugin gallery (as seen below), click on the "Get It" button and paste the code into the site.

Beyond ease of implementation, LinkedIn says that it has also "make significant infrastructure improvements to the platform itself," improving the JavaScript load-time and adding SSL and more robust OAuth support.

With the ability to easily add functionality like hovercard-esque LinkedIn profile summaries and company profiles, we'd be surprised if we didn't start seeing more LinkedIn content around the Web. Just as TechCrunch displays information about the companies mentioned in its article pulled from CrunchBase, other blogs and sites could now display LinkedIn information, which has the advantage of being fully interactive with the viewer's LinkedIn profile. While someone may not want to login to certain sites using their Facebook identity, this and the potential interaction with LinkedIn data and social graph could boost LinkedIn's presence on the Web drastically.

What do you think? Will the lure of profile summaries, company information and customized company profiles get you to second guess your login of choice on some sites? And how many sites will abandon Facebook to bring in the LinkedIn social graph instead?

Run Android Apps on Windows PC using Bluestacks

Have you ever wanted to try out an Android app without needing for Android Device handy ? then you must try outBluestacks !!

You may want to know what is BlueStacks and what does it do, alright it is simply a basically virtualization for Android, all what you have to do is to install BlueStacks on your Windows and Automatically the software will allow you to run an instance of Android right inside the app. From here the experience is just like having an Android device – except the phone calling thing.

Well there is nothing new in the app as we’ve been doing it for years with VMware or Parallels but this is the first time a mobile operating system has been invited to the party. Of course, why you’d really want to run Android on your computer we’re not entirely sure, but we’ve no doubt it will float someone’s boat out there.

Right now the BlueStacks website isn’t quite behaving itself and downloading the virtualization software is easier said than done, but if Android on Windows is your particular bag then keep trying, we’re assured it does work eventually!
Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to run Android, in Windows, in OS X on a Mac – just to see if the world implodes.

This App you can smell and taste it [Humor]

Yummy, did you smelled this Aroma ? it taste good, April fools day is long gone, but we thought we would let our readers in on a joke gone viral. Fox News San Diego’s Raoul Martinez pranked his co-anchor, Shally Zomorodi, into believing a new iOS app, Shock Top, left users smell and taste food. The result is pure fun.

Not only did Zomorodi eventually smell an iPad, but she proceeded to lick the iDevice too. Once she realized it was a joke, she left the stage, obviously embarrassed. Check the Video out :

On a lazy Wednesday, perhaps you too could trick somebody with the Shock Top app, available for free in the App Store.

Consumer Reports: iPad 2 the best tablet available

Apple’s uber-successful iPad 2 now has a Consumer Electronics stamp of approval, with the consumer magazine proclaiming the WiFi+3G version of the iconic device the best tablet available on the market. iPad 2 has beaten Motorola Xoom to the tablet punch, in addition to a bunch of would-be iPad killers from Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung and ViewSonic.

Consumer Reports put out a press release quoting their electronics editor Paul Reynolds:
So far, Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced. However, it’s likely we’ll see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the market.
iPad 2 emerged on top despite Consumer Reports calling the Xoom “the iPad 2′s chief rival.”

What gave me a pause is the fact that a pricey iPad model topped the charts, not the entry-level $499 model. The $730 32GB WiFi+3G model scored Excellent in nearly every category, leaving the $800 Xoom in the dust.

They evaluated the tablets on seventeen different criteria. Apple’s slate does have legendary battery life, the results show.

Consumer Reports measured 12.2 hours of non-stop video playback on iPad 2 versus its rated ten-hour battery life. The Archos 70 Internet Tablet has the poorest battery that lasts just 3.8 hours.

Facebook For iPhone Gets Event Check-Ins, Maps, And Unfriending

A couple weeks ago, after All Facebook spotted the ability to check-in to Facebook events, the social network confirmed that the feature would be launching shortly on the iPhone and their mobile-based touch site. Today, here it is.

Version 3.4 of Facebook’s iPhone app actually has a few other nice updates as well. These include the ability to view your friends on a map from the Places area (and it uses Google Maps, not Bing Maps), an “improved” News Feed, an “improved” notifications UI, and the ability to unfriend someone from your phone, finally.

But again, the big thing is the Facebook Event check-ins. Previously, you could only check-in via Facebook Places. That meant checking-in to various locations around cities just like you do on Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, and others. But now that you can check-in to events themselves, it opens a range of possibilities. You could run contests at events through this, for example.

To be able to check-in to an event you have to (obviously) be invited and RSVP’d “yes” to attending. Your location also has to match the location of the listed event venue, and it has to be the correct time of the event. All of this will help with gaming.

I just tested the feature out by creating a test event, and it works well. Assuming you’ve met all the above requirements, you’ll see a nice big “Check In” button on the event’s page. There’s also a new “Here Now” area on the event’s page to show you who is currently at the event. And the “Recent Activity” includes check-ins as well as pictures, comments, etc.

Viewsonic ViewBook 730 7-inch Android tablet hits the FCC, gets the full teardown treatment

It isn't the ViewPad 7 and it sure doesn't look like this seven-inch wild child either, so what you're looking at is another entry from Viewsonic, the e-reader focused ViewBook 730. It's a seven-inch tablet with WiFi sporting HDMI output and microSD in.

We know it's running Android and, while the exact flavor remains to be seen, based on the lock screen image shown in the device's manual it's not looking like the ViewBook 730 will not follow the Iconia Tab A100 as one of the few seven-inchers to be rocking Honeycomb. Android 2.X looks to be on the docket for now. Additionally, that manual talks about copying APK files around to install apps, making Android Market inclusion sound a bit doubtful, too. All that should equate to a low-low price, but such expectations are never safe in this world.

Toyota begins advertising on Cydia, targets members of jailbreak scene

Toyota, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, has taken to alternative iOS app-store and software repository Cydia to run a series of adverts and offer a sponsored theme, becoming one of the first major corporations to target members of the jailbreak scene.

The move was spurred by the Federal Government’s decision to make jailbreaking legal, allowing millions of iPhone and iPad owners to remove restrictions placed on their device but also giving companies a dedicated route by which they could start to engage with the jailbreak community.

Cydia’s creator Saurik estimates that around 9% of iOS users jailbreaking their devices, with 1.5 million unique users access Cydia daily. Topping 5 million users each week, it is thought that up to 15 million Apple devices have been jailbroken.

Acknowledging the growth of the community, Toyota has started to begin marketing on the app marketplace, designing a custom iPhone theme specifically for jailbroken devices, choosing to run a campaign with ModMyi.com, which sees them host the theme but also run ads on their website.

Toyota’s campaign sees it advertise its new Scion range, users simply need to search for Scion 2011 Theme in Cydia to download it. The company has also taken out ad spots within Cydia to promote its campaign.

Nissan, one of Toyota’s major rivals, became one of the first corporations to utilise Apple’s iAd platform, running a campaign for the Nissan Leaf. The company and its advert were even featured by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during one of his keynotes. Whilst Cydia might not have the visibility of Apple’s iAd platform, users are more educated on how to use their devices and marketing budgets are going to be somewhat lower than advertising directly with Apple.

The Cupertino-based company will not be happy with advertising dollars lining the pockets of third-party developers, particularly if it encourages other major brands to begin targeting the jailbreak community. It would be interesting to see if results proved favourable for Toyota, we have contacted them for comment and will update should we receive a reply.

Android Trojan Highlights Risks of Open Markets

Android enthusiasts have long championed Google’s “open” philosophy towards the smartphone platform. The recent appearance of a new Trojan horse in unofficial Android app venues, however, may cause users to think twice about how open they want the platform to be.

The app in question, Android.Walkinwat, appears to be a free, pirated version of another app, “Walk and Text.” The real version is available for purchase in Google’s official Android Market for a low price ($1.54).
If you download the fake app (from unofficial markets for Android apps) and install it, it redirects you to the actual app on the Android marketplace — but in the background, it sends the following embarrassing SMS message to your entire phone book:
Hey,just downlaoded [sic] a pirated app off the internet, Walk and Text for Android. Im stupid and cheap, it costed only 1 buck. Dont steal like I did!
Egregious spelling and grammatical errors aside, the text message serves as a reminder of the risks to those willing to go outside of the official Market for apps.
“Someone downloaded the app, inserted their malware, and uploaded it onto other non-official marketplaces,” Symantec mobile team product manager John Engels told Wired.com in an interview.
In other words, if you go outside the official Market, things may not be what they seem, and there’s no guarantee that what you download is what you actually want.
Google maintains clear content policies on all apps that are uploaded to the official Android Market, and developers know well enough in advance what those policies are, and how not to break them. Whenever an app in clear violation of Google’s policies shows up in the Market — like, say, a piece of malware — Google’s Android engineers are often quick to quash it.
But if you’re not one for pesky rules and regulations and want to see what the non-Google-sanctioned markets have to offer, all it takes to access them on an Android device is for you to uncheck a box on a settings page, allowing your phone to install apps from “unknown sources.”
To a certain degree, this isn’t a huge issue for the novice user. Many outside applications are hosted on file sharing websites that users like your grandmother probably aren’t frequenting. And unless they’ve tried to install these outside applications by sideloading them, they’ve probably never unchecked the unknown source’s permissions box to begin with.
But last week’s debut of Amazon’s new App Store may have changed that. In order to install Amazon’s App Store on an Android device, you first must uncheck that permissions box. While there may be no immediate risks associated with downloading apps from Amazon’s App Store, it opens the door for users to allow other unofficial — and therefore riskier — apps to be installed on their devices, from other sources.
“As soon as you flip that switch and go away from the Android Market, which is the one place where most people go, then you are putting yourself at some risk,” security researcher Charlie Miller told Wired in a previous interview.
“The threat will persist so long as people continue to download pirated software from peer-to-peer networks,” Webroot threat research analysts Armando Orozco and Andrew Brandt told Wired.com.
They say sticking to the Android Market is your safest bet, but if you’re still compelled to go outside the official box for your apps, whether it be to Amazon’s App Store or another unofficial market, you should “scrutinize the permissions the App requests, and don’t install it if it wants access to certain functions (like the ability to send SMS messages) that the app shouldn’t need to access.”
But doesn’t staying within the confines of the Android Market defeat the purpose of choosing a platform with such an “open” philosophy? If you want a stricter, closed system with stringent regulation on its apps via a review process, you might as well buy an iPhone.
“Android users enabling sideloading doesn’t necessarily lead to piracy or installation of apps from unsafe sources,” says Alicia diVittorio, a spokewoman for Lookout Mobile Security. “In fact, it’s great to have another source for consumers to download apps from a reputable brand like Amazon.”
Indeed, Amazon’s Appstore isn’t a great deal different from Apple’s App Store: Both companies require an intense review and approval process before making any developer’s submitted applications available for purchase.
Essentially, there’s an inherent risk that comes with downloading apps for a device with an attitude of openness like the Android. Even the official Market is susceptible to infiltration by malware, as evidenced by the swath of malicious apps pulled from the store earlier this month.
But in a relatively free and open domain such as Android’s, the risk remains the price of admission.

Sony PSP, NGP to get Music Unlimited

Sony plans to expand its Music Unlimited streaming service to more of its gaming hardware, the company reportedly told Eurogamer in an interview published yesterday.

Speaking to the gaming publication, Shawn Layden, executive vice president and CEO of Sony Network Entertainment, said that Music Unlimited would be made available on the PlayStation Portable "in a matter of weeks." He then turned his attention to Sony's upcoming gaming device, codenamed the Next Generation

Portable (NGP), which the company plans to release at the end of 2011.
"We will make it happen," Layden said to Eurogamer in reference to bringing Music Unlimited to the NGP.

He went on to tell the publication that he believes his company's services need to be available on that device.
Music Unlimited, which came to the U.S. earlier this year, allows users to stream millions of songs on a slew of the company's devices, including its Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, and the PlayStation 3. The company's $3.99 per month basic plan includes access to the service on those devices, as well as the ability to sync existing music playlists with the user's computer. It also provides full access to the service's personalization offering.

Music Unlimited's premium option, priced at $9.99 per month, comes with all the features available in its basic plan, plus the ability to access so-called "premium channels." Most importantly, it allows for unlimited playback of the available tracks.

Sony's long-term plans with Music Unlimited have been speculated about for quite some time, due mainly to the company's own comments about its future.

Speaking earlier this year with Australia's The Age, Michael Ephraim, head of Sony Computer Entertainment in Australia, said that Music Unlimited might eventually cause his company to think twice about its partnership with Apple and iTunes.

"If we do [get mass take-up] then does Sony Music need to provide content to iTunes?'' Ephraim asked during his interview with The Age. ''Currently we do. We have to provide it to iTunes as that's the format right now."

But over the next several years, Sony doesn't seem so convinced of the importance of Apple's iTunes.
"Publishers are being held to ransom by Apple and they are looking for other delivery systems, and we are waiting to see what the next three to five years will hold," Ephraim said.

Thieves Are Stealing Children's Identities

Identity theft has saddled thousands of children with debt, sometimes for years before they ever discover their personal information has been stolen, a study says.

Within a database of 42,232 children that was compiled by an identity-protection business, 4,311 -- 10.2% -- had someone else using their Social Security numbers, according to "Child Identity Theft," a report by Richard Power, a distinguished fellow at Carnegie Mellon Cylab.

MORE ON THE PROBLEM: FTC: ID theft again tops consumer complaints

In one case, a 17-year-old girl's Social Security number was used by eight different people to amass $725,000 in debt. In another case, a 14-year-old boy had a 10-year-old credit history that included a mortgage on a $605,000 house, according to information supplied to Power by the identity-protection firm All Clear ID.

The study analyzed the types of documents on which the Social Security numbers appeared, and it found that 70% were loan or credit card applications, 18% utility bills, 5% property assessments, deeds, mortgages and foreclosures, 4% driver's licenses and 2% vehicle registration.

While 1 in 10 children in the database had their identities stolen, only 0.2% of the adults fell victim in the same way, Power says, and that stark contrast raises questions. "Are child Social Security numbers a hot commodity?" Power writes. "Are cyber criminals and other fraudsters seeking them out? Are child IDs preferable for fraudsters?"

The answer is that he doesn't know, and can't know until there is a study that is designed to compile results that can be extrapolated to the general population. Power says he and others at Carnegie Mellon University are considering such a study, but none is planned yet.

Meanwhile, it doesn't make a lot of difference what percentage of children's IDs are stolen, Power says. If you're the one it happens to, it's a nightmare, and most people don't even consider it as a possibility. "The other dimension is to raise awareness of this as an issue," he says.

In some cases parents with bad credit ratings use their children's Social Security numbers to open accounts with utility companies so they can get water and electricity without intending to harm the children's credit, Holland says. In other cases, criminals use the number to profit. Some are used by people in the country illegally who are trying to establish credit, and buy houses and cars.

The database used for the study was all the people under 18 that were listed in All Clear ID's 800,000-plus database of people whose personally identifiable information had been compromised. The firm is hired by businesses that suffer data breaches and want to extend some protection to those who could become victims, says Bo Holland, All Clear ID's CEO.

In most cases, identities endangered by data breaches do not fall under systematic attack, Holland says. The identities are compromised, but don't appear to be taken by someone who then actively tries to capitalize on them. Names that fell under targeted attacks were dropped from the database used for the study, he says.

People worried that a child's Social Security number is being misused can check it out free at http://freechildscan.allclearid.com for a limited time.

Facebook Profile Migration Tool Takes a Hiatus

The tool allowed users to convert Facebook Profiles into Facebook Pages, turning friends into fans, and was aimed primarily at brands and organizations.

The new feature was launched to little fanfare earlier this week, but managed to generate a lot of publicity after being featured on Inside Facebook, CNET, The Huffington Post and of course, Mashable. I decided to test the tool on my own account — and ran into a number of serious problems. Although my situation was resolved (a huge thanks to the Facebook engineer who helped me), it’s not an experience I would wish on anyone.

As of Friday, the option to convert profiles to pages appears to be disabled. Visiting the tool page redirects to the standard “create a page” tool. We’ve reached out to Facebook for official comment.

In the comments on my post yesterday, other readers who had attempted the conversion chimed in with their experiences. It’s likely that the additional publicity given to the tool resulted in a large number of inadvisable migrations.

If the tool does return, only use it if you are absolutely certain of the consequences. The Facebook terms of service state that inanimate objects, pets, and businesses can’t have personal profile pages — so in these cases, a migration makes sense. Otherwise, you’re better off sticking with the profile you already have.

If it’s for anything other than TOS compliance, it’s probably not a good idea to move forward.

Facebook Merges Mobile Sites for All Phones

Facebook is revamping the mobile interface of the site, as the social network announced 250 million people use the site via their mobile phones. Instead of having several versions of the site for touchscreen phones, and non-touchscreen phones, Facebook will implement one single mobile site that adapts features available to users depending on the phone they use.

Facebook Product Designer Lee Byron wrote on the company's blog that running several versions of mobile sites was stifling the ability to innovate, because developers had to work on several code bases. So instead, they are launching a unified mobile site, eliminating the differences between touch.facebook.com and m.facebook.com.

"There will no longer be a difference between m.facebook.com and
touch.facebook.com, we'll automatically serve you the best version of the site for your device," Byron explains. "This way we can move even faster and build new features just once for every mobile device."

In the new m.facebook.com, touchscreen smartphone visitors will see Facebook's touch-friendly interface (previously of touch.facebook.com), which adapts on the phone's hardware capabilities. For example, a phone with no GPS will not see the Places Check-in feature. Feature phone users will see a scaled-down version of the mobile site, with an interface adapted for their screens.

To power the new mobile site, Facebook created a UI framework based on XHP, Javelin, and WURFL, a detailed database matching features available to device capabilities. 0.facebook.com, the text-only Facebook mobile site designed for speed, will also use the same framework.

"This enables us to very precisely target experiences and features to thousands of different devices," Byron writes. "For example, some devices don't have keyboards, or have limited means of navigating a page, tiny screens, or crippling browser bugs. We can customize our site in each case to deal with these issues and provide the best possible experience to everyone."

New Apps for Your iPhone and Android

Both iPhone & Android

SocialCam: This app offers you an easy way to share videos with your friends. With the app, you can record, tag and share your videos in addition to browsing, liking and commenting on those belonging to friends.

Kazaa: Instead of launching in the official app stores, Kazaa made its music subscription service available on mobile via www.kazaa.com. The decision was made primarily to thumb its nose at Apple, because of the company's "recent announcement that it will now keep 30% of revenue generated by new subscriptions and media purchases," says Zazaa.
Color: At launch, this location-based photo sharing app was widely denounced by reviewers who weren't pleased with the user experience (but who were likely just expecting more given the outrageous $41 million in funding its creators received). Curious what all the fuss was about? Color is free for iPhone and Android.

iPhone

QuickCam: A seriously fast iPhone camera app is perfect for taking photos quicker and allows for fast switching between photo and video mode. You can even hold the button for rapid-fire photos or take stills while shooting video. (Note to parents with small, wiggly children: it's a must!)
Qik Video Connect: Post-Skype acquisition, Qik launched a new iPhone app that offers video calling, video messaging and video sharing. A Plus version for $2.99 offers more features including real-time effects, video editing and HD support.
Vimeo: The popular video-sharing website now has its own iPhone app - and it doesn't just let you watch videos, it lets you edit and share them too. Take that, YouTube!
Last Night Never Happened: This awesome app lets you automatically delete the (drunken, embarrassing) social networking posts you made during your lapse in judgement. Supports Facebook and Twitter, and allows you to remove posts, photos, comments, tweets and direct messages. Genius.
Addieu: This app lets you connect with new friends on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare in addition to adding them to your Contacts app list. Maybe this should have been in the SXSW section below, but it's actually handy long after the SXSW party week ended.
Follows: Obsessed with your stats? Follows tracks data related to your social networking profiles on services like Twitter, Facebook, Feedburner, MySpace, Vimeo, YouTube, Flickr and LinkedIn. With this app, you can easily see your follower count, reader count, friend count and more.
TechDygest: An intelligent aggregator providing relevant news, summarized for quick reading. There are four different apps to choose from Dygest.com. TechDygest for tech news, iDygest for Apple news, gameDygest for gaming news and celebDygest for Hollywood gossip.
Mozy: The new iOS app works with the online backup and storage service allowing you to locate files, photos and other media using your phone. You can then open those files, share them via email or post to Facebook.
Pimp Your Screen: A useful tool for iPhone customization without jailbreaking, this app provides backgrounds, icon skins, app shelves, neon combos and more. And it lets you preview your customizations before applying them.
Ditto: From Jaiku founder Jyri Engeström, this location-based app lets you post what you're doing and where, under categories like "at home," "eat out," "work," "see movie," and more.
Zapd: This app lets you create an attractive website from your iPhone in minutes using templates.  And it's free! Isn't technology amazing?
MyStreamApp: Instead of sharing headphones, this app lets you share your music over a Wi-Fi connection.

Android

Flow: A Facebook app for Android that brings push notifications, comment liking, tagging friends in statuses and other missing features from Facebook's official app. (Actually, Facebook allows for push notifications, but not to the same extent as provided in Flow).
Thrutu: This app enhances phone calls by allowing you to share your location, photos, contacts and other files with callers without disrupting the conversation.
ReadItLater Pro: This 99 cents app lets you read your saved reading list items from the online service via your Android phone.
Feedly: This RSS app's popular online magazine-style reader comes to Android. It integrates with Google Reader, Twitter, Read it Later, bit.ly and Instapaper.
Dynamic Paint Live Wallpaper: From KittehFace Software (oh, the name), this fun live wallpaper lets you spray and splatter paint onto your home screen with a touch of your finger.

Wave Launcher: Not a full launcher, but more of a pop-up bar for launching favorite apps through a simple gesture.
Launcher 7: Lusting after Windows Phone 7? This app lets you modify your start screen with the Metro UI look and feel.
Firefox 4: The newest version of the Firefox for Android Web browser brings Firefox sync, tabbed browsing, HTML5 support, and speed to Android. But it's 14 MB in size, be warned.

Comcast Xfinity: The Xfinity app, now available on Android, brings remote DVR management, TV listings and OnDemand searches to Android. No remote TV viewing, though. Bummer.
Slate: Popular online mag Slate arrives in Android format.
imo instant messenger: This multi-protocol IM app launched into beta for Android in late March. Supports Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Skype, MSN, ICQ/AIM, Yahoo, Jabber, and Myspace.
Scannify: Discover, manage and connect to devices on your Wi-Fi network using this new app.

The Apps of SXSW

BelugaAcquired by Facebook just prior to SXSW, Beluga was the app of choice for team RWW at SXSW. This group messaging app lets you create "pods" where you can chat with friends in private chat rooms, share photos and share your location. iPhone/Android supported.
GroupMe: Similar to Beluga, this group chat app also made waves at SXSW. In addition to text-based group chat, another feature gives each group a unique phone number for conference calls. GroupMe also just added support for brands, allowing users to engage in conversations about favorite TV shows, bands and events.
Yobongo: A location-based mobile chat app lets you communicate with those around you, a feature which the company calls "ambient real-time communication." The app is currently available in NY, SF and Austin only.
Fast Society: Launched last fall, this group texting app debuted new iPhone and Android versions for SXSW. Groups can chat, conference call, share location, photos and more. It also supports audio-based "shout outs" that are sent right into the group's stream.
Hurricane Party: This app helped SXSW'ers find the happening parties. We're not entirely convinced the app has shelf life beyond the Austin festival, though. But maybe that's just because we live somewhere really boring.
Ask Around: Yes, that Ask.com This iPhone app is a lot like Yobongo in that it connects you to nearby conversations, but it also lets you find out what people are saying across town, too.
Retrollect: Before there was Color, this mobile photos app let you mashup pics, tweets and status updates to give you a play-by-play of your night, outing or other experience or event you wanted to remember.
Kik: This older group messaging app introduced a "Concierge" service at SXSW, letting users ask questions and get answers in real-time.

Notable Updates

Posterous added private groups to its iPhone and Android apps, allowing users to create private sharing groups on the go, each with their own dedicated website.
Camera+: Everyone's favorite alternative camera app for iPhone was updated to version 2.2, introducing a new feature called Clarity that lets you tap once to automatically adjust a photo to perfection.

LauncherPro: The update to this popular Android launcher brings new animations and a Gmail widget.
Adobe Connect Mobile for Android: This is the second major version of the Web conferencing app. It now supports two-way video, tablets and more.
IMDb: The IMDb iOS app was updated this month to feature a watchlist and enhanced showtimes. It also lets you buy movie tickets within the app.
