Windows 8 first impressions: What happened to ‘no compromises?’

After hours fiddling with the developer preview of Windows 8, we've reached some conclusions. While there's a lot to love, Microsoft still has some work ahead of it to scrub out the past and make the Windows 8 the reinvention it needs to be.

Taking better HDR photos with your iPhone 4

Amplify’d from www.jailbreakme.ca
Curious about how to take better HDR (high dynamic range) photos with youriPhone 4? Maybe you’ve tried it out but the end result wasn’t as good as you were expecting? Apple makes it pretty easy to take HDR photos, but for some pointers on how to take the best HDR photos possible just follow along after the break!
When Apple introduced iOS 4.1 they included HDR capability for the iPhone 4. This rather basic form of HDR works by combining 3 photos (under-exposed, normally-exposed, and over-exposed) for better overall detail and quality. So instead of the sky looking washed-out or shadows an inky mess, you’re left with a better balanced photo that shows more in both areas.

LinkedIn's Answer to Facebook's Open Graph

Professional social network Linkedin has opened up access to a new developer platform today that should bring LinkedIn content, buttons, Twitter-esque "profile summaries" and more to websites throughout the Web.

The platform, though, isn't just for developers. LinkedIn is offering an entire suite of plugins to bring all of this content to your website. Even better, it's making it as easy as the click of a button and it could offer some serious competition to Facebook's Open Graph on sites that cater to the career-minded.

"With this release, we're including a powerful set of new plugins; to further help bring professional identity & insights into your application," writes the company on its blog. "For example, you can show your visitors who they know in a professional context with the Member Profile plugin, and display rich personalized insights about companies featured on your site with the Company Insider plugin."

On top of buttons for sharing websites and recommending products, LinkedIn is offering a set of plugins to display profile summaries, full profiles, company profiles and "company insider." This last plugin shows customized information about a company including who, in the logged-in person's network, works there, a list of new hires and job changes, and even the ability to follow such news. That's the other big offering - a LinkedIn login that supports OAuth 2.0.

The ease with which these features can be implemented will likely be the most exciting point for many non-developers. The plugins take a couple lines of code that can be copied and pasted into a site's code. All you need to do to get a plugin is go to LinkedIn's plugin gallery (as seen below), click on the "Get It" button and paste the code into the site.

Beyond ease of implementation, LinkedIn says that it has also "make significant infrastructure improvements to the platform itself," improving the JavaScript load-time and adding SSL and more robust OAuth support.

With the ability to easily add functionality like hovercard-esque LinkedIn profile summaries and company profiles, we'd be surprised if we didn't start seeing more LinkedIn content around the Web. Just as TechCrunch displays information about the companies mentioned in its article pulled from CrunchBase, other blogs and sites could now display LinkedIn information, which has the advantage of being fully interactive with the viewer's LinkedIn profile. While someone may not want to login to certain sites using their Facebook identity, this and the potential interaction with LinkedIn data and social graph could boost LinkedIn's presence on the Web drastically.

What do you think? Will the lure of profile summaries, company information and customized company profiles get you to second guess your login of choice on some sites? And how many sites will abandon Facebook to bring in the LinkedIn social graph instead?

Run Android Apps on Windows PC using Bluestacks

Have you ever wanted to try out an Android app without needing for Android Device handy ? then you must try outBluestacks !!

You may want to know what is BlueStacks and what does it do, alright it is simply a basically virtualization for Android, all what you have to do is to install BlueStacks on your Windows and Automatically the software will allow you to run an instance of Android right inside the app. From here the experience is just like having an Android device – except the phone calling thing.

Well there is nothing new in the app as we’ve been doing it for years with VMware or Parallels but this is the first time a mobile operating system has been invited to the party. Of course, why you’d really want to run Android on your computer we’re not entirely sure, but we’ve no doubt it will float someone’s boat out there.

Right now the BlueStacks website isn’t quite behaving itself and downloading the virtualization software is easier said than done, but if Android on Windows is your particular bag then keep trying, we’re assured it does work eventually!
Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to run Android, in Windows, in OS X on a Mac – just to see if the world implodes.

This App you can smell and taste it [Humor]

Yummy, did you smelled this Aroma ? it taste good, April fools day is long gone, but we thought we would let our readers in on a joke gone viral. Fox News San Diego’s Raoul Martinez pranked his co-anchor, Shally Zomorodi, into believing a new iOS app, Shock Top, left users smell and taste food. The result is pure fun.

Not only did Zomorodi eventually smell an iPad, but she proceeded to lick the iDevice too. Once she realized it was a joke, she left the stage, obviously embarrassed. Check the Video out :

On a lazy Wednesday, perhaps you too could trick somebody with the Shock Top app, available for free in the App Store.

Consumer Reports: iPad 2 the best tablet available

Apple’s uber-successful iPad 2 now has a Consumer Electronics stamp of approval, with the consumer magazine proclaiming the WiFi+3G version of the iconic device the best tablet available on the market. iPad 2 has beaten Motorola Xoom to the tablet punch, in addition to a bunch of would-be iPad killers from Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung and ViewSonic.

Consumer Reports put out a press release quoting their electronics editor Paul Reynolds:
So far, Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced. However, it’s likely we’ll see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the market.
iPad 2 emerged on top despite Consumer Reports calling the Xoom “the iPad 2′s chief rival.”

What gave me a pause is the fact that a pricey iPad model topped the charts, not the entry-level $499 model. The $730 32GB WiFi+3G model scored Excellent in nearly every category, leaving the $800 Xoom in the dust.

They evaluated the tablets on seventeen different criteria. Apple’s slate does have legendary battery life, the results show.

Consumer Reports measured 12.2 hours of non-stop video playback on iPad 2 versus its rated ten-hour battery life. The Archos 70 Internet Tablet has the poorest battery that lasts just 3.8 hours.

Facebook For iPhone Gets Event Check-Ins, Maps, And Unfriending

A couple weeks ago, after All Facebook spotted the ability to check-in to Facebook events, the social network confirmed that the feature would be launching shortly on the iPhone and their mobile-based touch site. Today, here it is.

Version 3.4 of Facebook’s iPhone app actually has a few other nice updates as well. These include the ability to view your friends on a map from the Places area (and it uses Google Maps, not Bing Maps), an “improved” News Feed, an “improved” notifications UI, and the ability to unfriend someone from your phone, finally.

But again, the big thing is the Facebook Event check-ins. Previously, you could only check-in via Facebook Places. That meant checking-in to various locations around cities just like you do on Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, and others. But now that you can check-in to events themselves, it opens a range of possibilities. You could run contests at events through this, for example.

To be able to check-in to an event you have to (obviously) be invited and RSVP’d “yes” to attending. Your location also has to match the location of the listed event venue, and it has to be the correct time of the event. All of this will help with gaming.

I just tested the feature out by creating a test event, and it works well. Assuming you’ve met all the above requirements, you’ll see a nice big “Check In” button on the event’s page. There’s also a new “Here Now” area on the event’s page to show you who is currently at the event. And the “Recent Activity” includes check-ins as well as pictures, comments, etc.

Viewsonic ViewBook 730 7-inch Android tablet hits the FCC, gets the full teardown treatment

It isn't the ViewPad 7 and it sure doesn't look like this seven-inch wild child either, so what you're looking at is another entry from Viewsonic, the e-reader focused ViewBook 730. It's a seven-inch tablet with WiFi sporting HDMI output and microSD in.

We know it's running Android and, while the exact flavor remains to be seen, based on the lock screen image shown in the device's manual it's not looking like the ViewBook 730 will not follow the Iconia Tab A100 as one of the few seven-inchers to be rocking Honeycomb. Android 2.X looks to be on the docket for now. Additionally, that manual talks about copying APK files around to install apps, making Android Market inclusion sound a bit doubtful, too. All that should equate to a low-low price, but such expectations are never safe in this world.

Toyota begins advertising on Cydia, targets members of jailbreak scene

Toyota, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, has taken to alternative iOS app-store and software repository Cydia to run a series of adverts and offer a sponsored theme, becoming one of the first major corporations to target members of the jailbreak scene.

The move was spurred by the Federal Government’s decision to make jailbreaking legal, allowing millions of iPhone and iPad owners to remove restrictions placed on their device but also giving companies a dedicated route by which they could start to engage with the jailbreak community.

Cydia’s creator Saurik estimates that around 9% of iOS users jailbreaking their devices, with 1.5 million unique users access Cydia daily. Topping 5 million users each week, it is thought that up to 15 million Apple devices have been jailbroken.

Acknowledging the growth of the community, Toyota has started to begin marketing on the app marketplace, designing a custom iPhone theme specifically for jailbroken devices, choosing to run a campaign with ModMyi.com, which sees them host the theme but also run ads on their website.

Toyota’s campaign sees it advertise its new Scion range, users simply need to search for Scion 2011 Theme in Cydia to download it. The company has also taken out ad spots within Cydia to promote its campaign.

Nissan, one of Toyota’s major rivals, became one of the first corporations to utilise Apple’s iAd platform, running a campaign for the Nissan Leaf. The company and its advert were even featured by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during one of his keynotes. Whilst Cydia might not have the visibility of Apple’s iAd platform, users are more educated on how to use their devices and marketing budgets are going to be somewhat lower than advertising directly with Apple.

The Cupertino-based company will not be happy with advertising dollars lining the pockets of third-party developers, particularly if it encourages other major brands to begin targeting the jailbreak community. It would be interesting to see if results proved favourable for Toyota, we have contacted them for comment and will update should we receive a reply.
